The Beaches of Watamu – My Personal Journey Along the Coast
When I first arrived in Watamu, I didn’t just see beaches — I felt them. Each one seemed to have its own rhythm, its own story, and its own kind of beauty. Over time, I started to realize that Watamu’s coastline is more than a destination; it’s a collection of living, breathing places that shape the way people connect with the ocean.
Watamu Beach
Watamu Beach was the first place that truly captured me. Early in the morning, the water is calm, and the sand feels cool beneath your feet. I often walk here before work — fishermen returning with their nets, the tide quietly pulling back. It’s lively, yet somehow peaceful, and that balance is what I love most.
Turtle Bay
Just a few minutes away, Turtle Bay shows a completely different side of Watamu. The reef protects the bay, so the water stays crystal clear. I’ve spent countless hours snorkeling here, surrounded by fish and sometimes a curious turtle gliding by. It never gets old. A good place to start your Dolfin watching trip.
We have seen many of them. Very close to the boat, so you we could actually hear them breathing!
Garoda Beach
Further south, Garoda Beach always feels open and free. When the tide goes out, long sandbanks appear, and you can walk far into the sea. The horizon stretches endlessly — it’s the kind of view that makes you forget time. At low tide you can see (harmless) baby sharks near the sandbanks.
Jacaranda Bay & Kachawa Beach
Jacaranda Bay is where I go to think. It’s quiet, natural, and almost untouched. Meanwhile, Kachawa Beach has a different energy — full of local life, fishermen, and children playing in the waves. It reminds me why Watamu still feels authentic and alive. When visiting Kachawa, definately visit Marys beach restaurant and bar. If you order food, it will take some time (pole, pole) , but the place is amazing
Short Beach
Here is nothing. Just a short beach. But,….that is what ik makes so special. Untouched. If you walk down to the beach trough end you see the ocean, the contrast of colors of the beach, the ocean and the bushes are amazing. Good place to chill in the early morning or before sunset.
Each beach here tells its own story, but together they create what I now call home — the real Watamu.
